The Department of Communication is a collaborative community of faculty, students, and staff at the forefront of understanding the ever-changing communications and media landscape. At the very heart of all communication lies creativity and innovation. Students studying communication at Walla Walla University can explore the world through studying abroad, participating in research, acting on stage or in films, or interning with a variety of companies.

With a communications degree, students graduate with marketable skills that fit many different job roles in social media, public relations, journalism, fundraising, marketing, human resources, and more.

College Experience

What will your college experience look like as a communication major?

Adventist Colleges Abroad: Students can explore the world through study abroad through the Adventist Colleges Abroad program. They can learn a foreign language and earn an academic minor in that language as well.

Film Festivals: Each year students are given the opportunity to attend the SonScreen Film Festival, the Sundance Film Festival, and the International Christian Film Festival.

Honor Society: Students with the required GPA and satisfactory department standing are inducted into Nu Zeta, the WWU chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Association honors society. This provides professional advancement and connections as students continue on from WWU into their professional careers.

Internships: Students majoring in Strategic Communication intern at profit and nonprofit organizations as content writers, social media interns, and public relations assistants. Global communication students intern with international organizations assisting their linguistic and public relations processes.

What can your career path as a communication major look like?

Communication majors are well-suited for a wide range of careers due to the versatile skills they acquire. It is an integral component across many industries, and common career paths include public relations specialist, social media manager, corporate communication specialist, and journalist. The communication skills, critical thinking, and adaptability gained through a communication major make graduates well-suited for diverse and dynamic career paths. Depending on their specific interests and focus areas within communication, individuals can find fulfilling roles in various industries.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Overall employment in media and communication occupations is projected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations from 2022 to 2032. About 114,300 openings are projected each year, on average.“
