ICantori of Walla Walla University
ICantori the select choir of Walla Walla University, an auditioned group chosen from the 1,500-member student body, enjoys a history of touring that began in 1929. Renamed ICantori (Italian: “the singers”) in 1979, the ensemble has traveled extensively in the Pacific Northwest and western United States and appeared also in Canada, Russia, and Romania. Since 2011 they have performed at venues including The Cathedral of Christ the Light (Oakland), St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral (Seattle), St. James Cathedral (Seattle), Christ Church Episcopal (Tacoma), Trinity Episcopal Cathedral (Portland), the Co-Cathedral of Saint Theresa (Honolulu), the historic Kawaiaho’o Church (Honolulu), Peachtree Road United Methodist Church (Atlanta), the Cathedral of St. John the Divine (New York), St. Patrick Cathedral (New York). Their repertoire focuses on classical music but includes a wide variety of styles. The choir regularly performs for the 2,000-member Walla Walla University Church of Seventh-day Adventists and offers a major concert each quarter on campus. Tours are funded by the University and generous donations from interested supporters. We invite you to support our touring by sending a check marked "ICantori Tour Fund" to the WWU Department of Music, 204 S. College Avenue, College Place, WA 99324.
Choral Auditions
Choral audition sign-ups are available September 22, 2024 in the Fine Arts Center (FAC) lobby!
Both University Singers and ICantori require an audition. These auditions are used to get acquainted with you and your voice, and to make sure that everyone is placed in the right choral section. Incoming freshmen should sign up and grab music from the FAC lobby by Sunday (9/22/24) of JumpStart week. Returning students/members must also audition once they arrive on campus.
The audition itself is a short, low-stress, 10-minute affair. Remember to look at the music ahead of time, and learn your part! Listed below are the areas that are evaluated:
- Vocal quality (Is this a voice whose sound would fit into a choir?)
- Vocal ability (Does this singer know how to use their voice; have they had good vocal instruction?)
- Reading ability (Can this singer read music?)
- Ear ability (Does this singer have a good ear?)
The official 2024-2025 ICantori roster will be posted on the choir room door before class on Wednesday, October 2.
