Last week, Walla Walla University students had the opportunity to interview on-campus with representatives from AdventHealth, a Seventh-day Adventist non-profit healthcare system. These interviews were held in Bowers Hall, with more than 30 student participants, and many more students were able to join an informative dinner with AdventHealth as well.
The dinner was held on October 25, 2023, and provided students with knowledge about the internships, and how the company operates as a whole. Abigail Martinez Perez, a junior business major, attended the dinner and said she learned about what she could expect to gain from the internship experience and what would be expected of her as an intern.
Perez explained this would be an 11 week internship, running from June to August 2024. The internship initially began in May, however, AdventHealth has been willing to work with the quarter system that WWU utilizes, because they have been very impressed by previous interns and wish to continue to hire WWU students.
Ashly Borrosso, a junior business administration major and pre-medicine student, met with Wendy Newmyer to interview for a position in AdventHealth’s human resources department. After college, Borrosso plans on working in the healthcare system, and so she chose to interview for this position because it would provide the necessary hands-on experience and in-person guidance that Borrosso will need for her future in healthcare.
Both students had a positive interview experience where they were able to learn a lot about the application process, how to answer questions, and how to write resumes and cover letters. Perez said that she gained good, constructive feedback on how to better her interview skills, and Borrosso commented that “this experience is definitely very useful and helpful… I definitely would do it again!”
Every WWU business major is required to complete an internship before they are able to graduate, and AdventHealth is just one organization that hires WWU students. Other recent opportunities have come from the Washington State Legislature, Loma Linda University Health, and the Seventh-day Adventist Church Washington Conference.
