During a visit to Walla Walla on October 6, Governor Jay Inslee visited the homeless shelter constructed by Walla Walla University’s Engineers Without Borders team. 

The EWB team from WWU finished this wheelchair accessible homeless shelter back in June 2021. These shelter huts allow people to have privacy and protection against weather. The group of students took the existing smaller design and engineered it to function a larger hut made for two people. They then worked together to construct this shelter. 

The team originally planned to travel to India for a project but were unable because of COVID regulations. Instead, they chose to look for a local project. They were connected to the need for a larger shelter at the Sleep Center through David Lopez and his connections to the Center of Humanitarian Engagement. 

The EWB chapter at WWU is a student-led group with members from a variety of majors and class standings who all come together for the shared purpose of serving the world around them, both locally and abroad.
