MSW and BSW Program Assessment Results
The Social Work program at Walla Walla University received its first accreditation in the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) in 1979 and initial CSWE accreditation for the MSW Program was granted in 1992. Since that time, the School of Social Work has successfully obtained reaffirmation of accreditation through 2019 for both the BSW and MSW Programs. In many states, including the State of Washington, applicants for social work licensure must have obtained a bachelor or graduate degree in social work from an academic program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) promotes academic excellence in baccalaureate and master’s social work education. The EPAS specifies the curricular content and educational context to prepare students for professional social work practice. Competency-based education is an outcome performance approach to curriculum design. Assessment is an integral part of competency-based education. Both the BSW and MSW program have their own 13 standards or program competencies that they seek to achieve.
There are two key methods that are used to assess the MSW program attainment of competencies: Comprehensive exam results, and the field learning agreements. Please note that the MSW program is assessed at two levels: MSW first or foundation year competencies, and MSW second or advanced year competencies. For MSW foundation year, only comprehensive exam results are used to assess the attainment of competencies. For MSW advanced year, both comprehensive exam results and the field learning agreement are used to assess the attainment of competencies.
