The Walla Walla University Department of Music will begin their 2023-24 recital and concert series with an organ recital by professor of music Kraig Scott on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the Walla Walla University Church. Scott will perform works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Louis Vierne, Rachel Laurin, and others, representing a wide range of musical eras along the theme Bells and Lullabies.
Scott centered the selected pieces around “Sonata No.1 for organ, Op.91” by Rachel Laurin, which includes both a lullaby and bells in its second and third movements. Selected pieces were inspired by the carillon tunes of Westminster Cathedral in London, and the chapel of the Chateau de Longpont in Aisne, France.
Scott has made recital appearances through North America, Europe, and the Far East, and has presented master classes at many institutions including the Eastman School, University of Oregon, Westminster Choir College, and for several chapters of the American Guild of Organists. He has taught and conducted at Walla Walla University for more than 35 years.
The church’s grand Casavant-Frères organ, which houses 4,982 pipes, has been an important cornerstone of worship and music at WWU since it was completed in the 1960s.
The Walla Walla University Church is located at 212 S.W. Fourth Street in College Place. The recital is free and open to the public.
