Hensley showcases what it's like in the screenwriting industry

During winter quarter, the Department of Communication hosted Mellinda Hensley for a colloquium about her experience in screenwriting. Currently, Hensley is working as a story editor on the "Just As I Am" series being produced by the Walla Walla University Center for Media Ministry.

Hensley is a writer and director from a small town in Indiana. Starting as an assistant on daytime's #1 show, “The Young and the Restless,” she became an associate head writer by age 28. In 2020, she received a Writers Guild of America Award and Emmy nomination.

This colloquium served as an opportunity for students to hear about the experience of being on a production team, and how every piece of the production depends on another. Speakers like Hensley aid students in gaining a clearer understanding of the professional landscape and discerning their future career paths more effectively. Emily Vaughn, a freshman film major who attended the event, said, “It was super cool to hear about that from someone who has experience and is working in that field. I thought her experiences and advice was good and something I can also apply to me.”
