Mission Statement

The Walla Walla University Department of Mathematics broadly supports the mission of Walla Walla University and seeks to foster the creativity and intelligence of our community by:

  • Equipping students with the conceptual understanding, problem solving skills, and the persistence of character needed to apply quantitative reasoning in their personal and professional lives;

  • Providing excellent instruction in mathematics for mathematics majors pursuing careers in mathematics, teaching, or industry, and for students in allied fields such as engineering or physical science with special mathematical requirements;

  • Creating a supportive learning environment that cultivates appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Demonstrate problem-solving skills through the application of mathematical principles to real-world and theoretical problems in the areas of calculus, algebra, probability, and statistics.
  2. Use effective communication to express mathematical ideas. This includes the ability to articulate mathematical concepts, present logical arguments, and interpret mathematical results.
  3. Apply critical thinking and mathematical reasoning to analyze mathematical arguments and proofs.
  4. Create an open-ended research project and produce high quality written and oral reports that describe appropriate mathematical insights.
