Student Learning Outcomes

Students who graduate with a music major will be able to:

  1. Analyze critically and contextually: Apply a combination of close reading skills to works of music from important genre categories and style periods—skills developed through a study of music theory, ear training, music history, and, in many cases, performing.
  2. Communicate music effectively from the stage: Perform, conduct, compose, teach, and produce music with technical excellence, theoretical and historical understanding, creativity, artistry, and integrity.
  3. Communicate about music in writing: Express observations and ideas about music accurately, clearly, and creatively in different genres for different audiences and purposes.
  4. Engage ethically: Apply the skills and insights acquired from studying music to actually sharing music with others for their enjoyment, comfort, and inspiration.
