Mission

The mission of THE OLMALAIKA HOME is to house and protect little girls (newborns through 10 yrs) who have experienced trauma and are in need of a warm, nurturing and loving environment; guiding them to see themselves as persons of value through God's eyes; fostering respect and appreciation for their peers, teachers, leaders, and culture, inspiring them to be a generation of educated, productive, respected and valuable young women.

Description

The Olmalaika Trust has a home for young girls, newborn up to age 10, who have experienced trauma in their lives - from female genital mutilation, to childhood marriage, rape, assault and abandonment. It is a place to begin healing, to be able to go to school and eventually to return home or get a forever family. Student Missionaries are a huge influence on their little lives, providing spiritual programing at the home, tutoring, play time, mentoring, supervising, helping the staff with cleaning, cooking, office work, hosting guests, maintenance, gardening, grounds work and more.

Student missionaries are responsible for cooking for themselves in an outdoor kitchen. SMs can go grocery shopping in Nairobi on their way in and weekly market days in the nearby village. Fresh produce may be available from the garden as well.

Student missionaries stay in a dorm room that has a refrigerator. Electricity is solar-powered. SMs wash their own clothes by hand in buckets and use clothes line for air-drying.

SMs will need an unlocked cell phone. A SIM card with Kenyan number can be purchased for $1, then load credit as needed. It's also best to download the SENDWAVE app. Friends and family can send money and can use the app any time for purchases with phone locally.

SMs fundraising will also cover an extra $35 local medical emergency flight insurance in case there is a medical emergency.

Visa information:

  • 3 months or less: The cost is $32.50 and SMs just need to fill out an online form a few weeks before leaving. The cost can be covered with fundraised money.
  • Longer than 3 months: The cost is $200 and the SM will need to get a work permit, which will require some advanced work sending documents to the organization electronically so they can process it. The cost can be covered with fundraised money.
